Texas' Oldest Spring Classic

Tour of Texas in Lago - 1989

Our Story

In 1972, a group of bike racers got together and hosted the first edition of La Primavera on the shores of Lake Austin, near Westlake High School. Hosted by a revolving group of cycling clubs, the race traveled around Texas as the first major race of the year and often served as a qualifier for national events later in the season.

In 1988 Dan Archer, a Sales Manager at the Inn on Lake Travis, was contacted by the National and International Bicycle Promotional Racing Group of Austin to book rooms for a professional bike race to be held in Lago Vista. Dan put the group in touch with the North Lake Travis Chamber of Commerce President Hollace Bowden, an avid cyclist himself.  Hollace asked that the promotion of the race and sponsors be handled locally and from 1988 to 1990, the City hosted the International Bike Race in Lago Vista. The race attracted teams from 24 countries those headed to the 1988 summer Olympics in South Korea.

In 1991, the international race moved on, but Hollace still wanted a bike race to come to town. He called the Eurosport bike shop in Austin, who sent them straight to Don Hutchison and his club, Peloton Racing. Since 1992, Don has hosted a bike race in Lago Vista every year, always on the first weekend of March, his "birthday weekend." In 1998, he acquired the La Primavera race and hosted the first La Primavera at Lago Vista.
